Sustainable urban design
Designing our towns for people, not cars
Had enough of urban sprawl and its impacts on traffic, congestion, the environment and social cohesion? There is a better way.
New compact townships
An alternative to sprawl
Mixed-use communities where people can meet their daily needs on foot, by bike or by public transport.
Planned compact towns offer a new approach to building communities that support the endeavours and lifestyles of Southern Highlands residents: less time in the car, more time in the community, and a more efficient use of land.
Tullimbar Village tour
See it in practice
Tullimbar Village, a new town in the west of Shellharbour City, offers a refreshing alternative to conventional sprawl. It's a planned community that prioritises sustainability, liveability and community, with a mix of residential, commercial and recreational areas, pedestrian-friendly design, green spaces and shared amenities.
Robertson Futures × WinZero
A blueprint for Robertson
On 6 May 2023, Neville Fredericks was guest speaker at the Robertson Futures/WinZero event in Robertson. Chair of RADSPA, with fourteen years as a councillor and seven as Mayor of Kiama, Neville has spent decades studying how the layout of our communities affects the health of residents.
Community forum, Bowral
Are we planning for the communities we need?
Urban developer and former councillor Neville Fredericks was a guest speaker at a recent community forum in Bowral, where he challenged the way we plan and deliver housing in the Southern Highlands. Drawing on his extensive experience, Neville explored how our planning system often prioritises regulatory compliance over good design and community needs.
He made a compelling case for more diverse, affordable and thoughtfully designed housing that better reflects our changing demographics, while preserving the character and environment of the Southern Highlands. His presentation raises important questions about how we can create more liveable, sustainable and inclusive communities.
